For every three animals illegally traded, IFAW estimates that 10 will have died during the smuggling process.

Each year, millions of animals—many of which are endangered species—will be trafficked around the world. The animals that survive the terrifying journey face a miserable existence in captivity and will often suffer not only from self-inflicted injuries brought about by anxiety, stress, and depression but also physical abuse from their owners.

Papum had nowhere to go when poachers took his mother.

Papum, a moon bear cub, was only a month old when he was found alone in the Sagalee region of Arunachal Pradesh, in India. He was starving and scared. 

Across northeastern India, poaching of Asiatic Black bears is unfortunately a common occurrence. The cubs of poached mother bears often die alone, while others are captured for zoos or the exotic pet trade. 

Luckily, the IFAW–Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) Centre for Bear Rehabilitation and Conservation (CBRC) was there to help—and thanks to supporters like you, Papum was rescued, brought to safety, and given round-the-clock care.

Today, after years of specialised rehabilitation, he is living his best life back in the wild!
